Low Smoke, Zero Halogen XLPE

Tensility introduces the new Low Smoke, Zero Halogen XLPE Cable Assemblies and Wire series, a high-quality solution that is reliable and safe for a variety of applications in which smoke toxicity is a concern. The products are chemically resistant and rated at 105°C, making them good for labs and medical environments, through-the-wall fire ratings, and aerospace applications. The flat wire is designed to be low profile and flexible, allowing it to fit in confined spaces.

The Low Smoke, Zero Halogen XLPE cable assemblies are available in several configurations, including dc plug to stripped and tinned, 90° dc plug to stripped and tinned, plug to jack, and jack to stripped and tinned. The dc connectors available in this series are nickel-plated molding style connectors with spring contacts. The wire in this series is UL 4384 style with 2 conductors and a VW-1 rating. It is available from AWG 16-24, is rated at 300V, and has XLPE jacket material.

What is a Low Smoke Zero Halogen Wire?

Low smoke zero halogen wire is a type of wire that has a specially formulated jacket material. When the wire is exposed to an open flame the jacket will undergo a chemical reaction that releases small quantities of steam, which in turns reacts with itself to form a charred layer. This layer of char helps seal the jacket, preventing emissions of various gasses and optically dense smoke.

When to use a Low Smoke Zero Halogen Wire?

Low smoke zero halogen wire is most commonly used in confined spaces. In the event of a fire, minimizing the sources of smoke producing materials can lead to better safety.

    What are the LSZH regulations?

There are no regulations currently that single out the use of LSZH wire. In most applications where LSZH wire is used, the local electrical regulations require certain burn performances for wire based on the location of where it is installed. It is up to the individual installing the system to determine a suitable product to meet the electrical requirements. Certain industries have begun to adopt LSZH wire as the standard type of wire used, due to the confined spaces in which they are installed.

How is a LSZH cable tested?

A sample of the LSZH material is placed in a confined chamber. The sample is then exposed to a heat source to simulate the event of a fire. Optical sensors are then used to record the amount of light able to pass through the chamber. This test is intended to determine the optical density of the smoke.
